Definitely a memorable Memorial Day

30 May

Walked outside to have a cigarette, and smelled smoke.  Looked up and there are clouds of black smoke up the road.  Hollered at Mom – but the VFD was already down there.  Within five minutes the house four doors down was engulfed.

We went to the gal’s place across the way – who is in Louisiana, mind you – and were using the garden hoses to water down her fence line and house.  I got so wrapped up in the smoke, I couldn’t see.  It was like standing inside a dryer.  Lost my way – fell in the mud.  Then the fire jumped the back alley and lit up a storage shed behind her house – then jumped the road and lit up the shed behind us.  Literally at our back fence.

Scary doesn’t cover it.  Took almost four hours and 13 fire departments to get it under control.  Thought it was all said and done and I walk out back and that damn shed is smoking again.  Called 911.  They came back and got it under control.  We hope.  Keeping a close eye on it though.

No one was hurt though – including the firemen.  But now three families are displaced.  6 kiddos under the age of five.  I want to try to organize some kind of help soon, within the next day or so – but I have had enough for today.

Hug someone dear to you.  You just never know.

More pics after the jump:

This is the one by us that fired back up as they are putting it out – again.

A bit of the aftermath:

Three someone's actually. Two families with kids – and an older man that had lived there for about 30 years. I can't imagine…
