>Christmas for our Troops – UPDATED!

2 Dec

There has been an email, Facebook, Twitter bit circulating about sending cards to our soldiers this holiday season. It reads in part:
When filling out your Holiday cards this year, take ONE CARD and SEND it to this address: A Recovering American Soldier, c/o Walter Reed Army Medical Center…
Do NOT send stuff randomly to this address.
It won’t get to who you intend it to. It will end up in the garbage. One of the consequences of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 is that the U.S. Postal Service will no longer deliver mail addressed to “Any Service Member,” “A Recovering American Soldier,” or any similar generic addressee.
The Army recommends instead making donations to one of the nonprofit organizations dedicated to supporting the troops and their families listed at www.ourmilitary.mil, or to the American Red Cross.
The American Red Cross has announced a program to facilitate the collection and distribution of holiday greeting cards for wounded and recovering military personnel at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and other facilities through December 10, 2010. It’s called “Holiday Mail for Heroes.”
Please note: no packages or inserts of any kind will be accepted due to security concerns, but cards and notes to hospitalized servicemen and women may be sent to the following address:
Holiday Mail for Heroes
PO Box 5456
Capitol Heights, MD 20791-5456
For further details visit the Red Cross Holiday Mail for Heroes website.
We used to live in Killeen (where Ft. Hood is located) and I can tell you personally that none of the stuff ever sees anyone. It goes immediately in the trash for security reason. Visit the above sites if you’d like to do something for our troops. Deadline is Dec. 10th so hurry hurry!!!
More info here, also: http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/government/a/cards_soldiers.htm or you can simply Google or Bing it and you will find more of the same information.

UPDATE:  Marlene over at Disguised as a Grown-Up also brought Operation Write Home to my attention.  Their mission is supporting our nation’s armed forces by sending blank handmade greeting cards to write home on, as well as cards of gratitude to encourage them.  What another great cause!  Thanks, Marlene!!!

    >The AnySoldier.com family of sites (they include AnySailor, AnyMarine, AnyAirman, and AnyCoastGuardsman) isn't a hoax. They'll hook you up with the address of a miltary contact, and your letters and cards will be distributed there. I've sent letters and gotten responses through them, and they're legit. Thanks so much for posting this. I'll be definitely sending blank cards out this year. Such a great idea!
